Find your server's IP address and root password in the client area and connect over SSH from Windows, macOS or Linux, then secure the server with an SSH key.
The username is always root.
Note: If the root password shows Not set, reset it first — see Reset the root password of your Cloud VPS.
macOS, Linux and Windows 10/11 — open Terminal (or PowerShell on Windows) and run:
ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP
The first time, type yes to trust the server, then paste the root password. Nothing appears while you type a password — that is normal.
PuTTY (Windows) — enter the IP address as Host Name, port 22, connection type SSH, click Open, and log in as root.
Do these as soon as you can:
Update the system, for example on Ubuntu or Debian:
apt update && apt upgrade -y
Use an SSH key instead of a password. On your computer, create a key and copy it to the server:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519
ssh-copy-id root@YOUR_SERVER_IP
After you have checked that key login works, you can turn off password login in /etc/ssh/sshd_config (PasswordAuthentication no) and restart SSH.
Add firewall rules in your VPS → Management → Firewall. Keep port 22 open for the IP addresses you connect from, so you do not lock yourself out.
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Connection timed out | Check that the server is running on the Overview tab, and that a Firewall rule is not blocking port 22. |
| Permission denied | Copy the root password again. If it still fails, reset it. |
| Locked out after a configuration change | Use the browser console — see Use the browser console on your Cloud VPS. |
