Check your tablespace usage and free up space

Last reviewed: October 4, 2026 Applies to: APEX Shared 2 min read

See how much of your plan's database storage you are using, find the largest tables and reclaim space before you reach your quota.

Why it matters

Each APEX Shared plan includes a fixed amount of tablespace for your data. When it is full, inserts and updates fail with errors such as ORA-01653: unable to extend table or ORA-01654: unable to extend index. Checking usage now and then avoids surprises.

In the client area

Open Services and select your APEX service. The Tablespace box at the top shows how many megabytes you have used out of your plan's allowance. The bar changes colour when you pass 80%.

With SQL

Connect with SQL Developer or another tool (see How to connect to your schema with SQL Developer) and run:

SELECT ROUND(SUM(bytes) / 1024 / 1024, 1) AS used_mb
FROM   user_segments;

Compare the result with your plan's size in the Tablespace box. If you use additional workspaces, run the query in each of their schemas too — all workspaces on a service share the same tablespace.

To find what is taking up the space:

SELECT segment_name, segment_type,
       ROUND(SUM(bytes) / 1024 / 1024, 1) AS size_mb
FROM   user_segments
GROUP  BY segment_name, segment_type
ORDER  BY size_mb DESC
FETCH  FIRST 10 ROWS ONLY;

Free up space

  1. Empty the recycle bin. Dropped tables stay in Oracle's recycle bin and still count against your quota until you purge them:

    PURGE RECYCLEBIN;

  2. Delete data you no longer need, such as old log or audit tables. For large tables, TRUNCATE TABLE frees the space immediately, but it cannot be rolled back.

  3. Store large files outside the database where it makes sense, for example in your web space.

Note: Deleting rows does not always shrink a table's allocated space straight away. Purging the recycle bin and truncating unused tables are the quickest ways to see the number drop.

When you need more room

Open a support ticket in the Billing department and tell us which plan you would like — see Upgrade, renew or cancel a service. Plan sizes are listed on the compare plans page.
