How to connect to your schema with SQL Developer

Last reviewed: October 4, 2026 Applies to: APEX Shared 2 min read

Connect Oracle SQL Developer directly to your APEX HostMate schema to run SQL, browse tables and load data. It takes about five minutes.

Before you start

  • An active APEX Shared service. If your service page still shows Workspace setup in progress, wait for your welcome email first.
  • Oracle SQL Developer installed on your computer (free from Oracle).

Find your connection details

  1. Sign in to the client area at apexhostmate.com/client.
  2. Open Services and select your APEX service.
  3. In the Access details card you will find everything you need:
SQL Developer field Where to find it in the client area
Username Workspace / Username
Password Password (click Show or Copy)
Hostname Host, under SQL Developer / Toad / DBeaver
Port Port — 1555
Service name Service name — freepdb1

Note: The port is 1555, not Oracle's usual 1521, and you connect with a service name, not a SID.

Create the connection

  1. In SQL Developer, open the Connections panel and click the green + (New Database Connection).
  2. Name: anything you like, for example APEX HostMate.
  3. Database Type: Oracle.
  4. Authentication Type: Default. Enter your Username and Password. Tick Save Password only on your own, secured computer.
  5. Connection Type: Basic.
  6. Hostname: your Host. Port: 1555.
  7. Select Service name (not SID) and enter freepdb1.
  8. Click Test. The status at the bottom should read Success.
  9. Click Save, then Connect.

Verify

Run this query in the worksheet:

SELECT user AS schema_name,
       sys_context('USERENV', 'CON_NAME') AS container
FROM   dual;

You should see your own schema name and the container FREEPDB1.

Troubleshooting

Error Cause and fix
ORA-01017: invalid username/password Copy the password again with the Copy button — extra spaces are a common cause. Check that the username matches Workspace / Username.
ORA-12514: listener does not currently know of service SID was selected instead of Service name, or the service name is misspelled. It must be freepdb1.
ORA-12541, IO Error or a timeout The port is wrong (use 1555), or your network blocks outgoing connections on port 1555. Office and university networks often do — try another network, or ask your IT team to allow outgoing TCP port 1555.
