Export and import an APEX application

Last reviewed: October 4, 2026 Applies to: APEX Shared, Dedicated DB, Cloud DB 2 min read

Export an Oracle APEX application to a file for backup or transfer, and import it into a workspace — including its supporting objects and static files.

When to use this

  • To keep your own copy of an application, alongside our daily backups.
  • To move an application between workspaces or servers.
  • To create a test copy before making big changes.

Export an application

  1. Sign in to your APEX workspace and open App Builder.
  2. Select the application.
  3. Click Export / Import, then choose Export.
  4. Check the options:
    • Export Supporting Object Definitions — include this if you have defined supporting objects (scripts that create tables and other database objects during installation).
    • Export format — a single SQL file is the simplest to move around.
  5. Click Export. Your browser downloads a file such as f100.sql.

Static application files and shared components are included in the export automatically.

Note: An application export contains the application, not your table data. To move data, see Migrate your application from apex.oracle.com, which covers exporting and loading data.

Import an application

  1. Sign in to the target workspace and open App Builder.
  2. Click Import.
  3. Drag your export file onto the page, or choose it, and click Next.
  4. On the install screen, check:
    • Parsing Schema — the schema the application runs in;
    • Install As Application — keep the original application ID, or choose a new one if that ID is already used.
  5. Click Install Application. If the export includes supporting objects, APEX offers to install them too.

When the import finishes, click Run Application to test it.

Good practice

  • Export after every important change and keep the files somewhere safe, such as a private Git repository.
  • Use the same or a newer APEX version for the import. An export from a newer APEX version cannot be imported into an older one.
  • After importing, re-enter any passwords or API keys stored in Web Credentials — secrets are not included in exports.
